Fifty
years of Scandinavian Design (paperback edition)
During the 1950s “Scandinavian Design” or “Scandinavian
Modern” became a “must” in modern homes, both
Euro-pean and American. The launching of the concept was a pan-Nordic
campaign, including a number of big and successful exhibitions,
touring the world. And the establishment was the result of an intense
cultural and commercial effort, promoted by both Scandinavian and
American curators, museums and media. The fascinating story of this
success has not been written in one book before – but here
it is. It was published in connection with the big exhibition “Scandinavian
Design Beyond the Myth”, sponsored by the Nordic Council of
Ministers in the event of the 50th anniversary of “Scandinavian
Design”. In the book, as in the travelling exhibition, the
icons of ”Modern Scandinavian” is shown, along with
the latest interpretations of the concept by young designers from
the five Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and
Sweden. The texts are written by Scandinavian design historians
as well as experts from the USA, Germany and Great Britain.

Which
are the shifts in the design world that stand out most clearly?
How can design be linked to business growth? How is society at large
changing in the early 21st century? In FutureDesignDays’ Shift:
Design as usual – or a new rising? Lars Dencik, Professor
of Social Psychology at Roskilde University, addresses the changing
conditions of our times and sketches out what it means to be a human
being in an era of shifts.
The theme Shift is also interpreted from different perspectives
in articles on architecture, design, fashion, modern media and graphic
design by Maria Ben Saad, Andy Chen, Pierre Guillet de Monthoux,
Fredrik Hallberg, Carl Fredrik Hultenheim, Mats Pehrson, Cilla Robach,
Rick Sundberg and Kerstin Wickman. The cover illustration and the
full-page spread entitled “Global Irony” carry the signature

Swedish
and Scandinavian design are famous for being modernist, strict and
blond. Crafts from the Scandinavian countries show the same influences
but are created by artists with a profound understanding of the
technical possibilities and the aesthetic potential of the natural
materials. This Swedish and Scandinavian style was established internationally
back in the fifties by illustrious figures like Tapio Wirkkala from
Finland, Sweden's Tyra Lundgren, Denmark's Vibeke Klint and others.
These were craftspeople who cre-ated simple, natural forms in which
the material appeared almost in its original state in a way that
the rest of the world experienced as almost shockingly exotic.
Now things have changed. Towards the end of the century there was
growing protest against the purity and functionality of Swedish
crafts. The international anti-design movement had been active since
the 1960s and the bound-aries between art, architecture and design
were increasingly eroded. There was a hunger for desire while emotional
content increased and ornamentation which had been banished since
the early years of the 20th century made a comeback.

From
the sleek silhouettes of lustrous art glass to the cool contours
of sculptural furniture, Designed in Sweden showcases the dynamic
developments that characterise new Swedish design. As a forward-thinking
generation make a radical departure from traditional forms, today’s
designers are pioneering an exciting new vision that promises to
revolutionise Swedish design forever. Compelling, insightful and
far-reaching in content, Designed in Sweden is an essential guide
to the nation's most directional designers.
‘I’ve always thought of the Swedes as the “quiet”
ones of European design. Not any more. Designed in Sweden shows
that they’re crackling with confidence and originality and
suggests that Swedish is the design force to watch.’
– Fiona Rattray, Independent
‘Designed in Sweden banishes the persistent image of bendy
pale-wood chairs, nice-but-dull checked blankets and the flat pack
giant IKEA as the standard bearers for a nation’s design aesthetic.’
– David Nicholls, Telegraph
‘Designed in Sweden showcases the tone of the fresh and forward
new generation of Swedish designers – playful and witty in
design as well as in choice of material. A great surge of new talent.’
– Roberta Holm, Wallpaper*. |

Part
of the jury citation for Universeum, Gothenburg, recipient of the
2004 Wood Prize reads: “The use of the material is uncompromising,
pared-down and consistent, manifest-ing a desire to explore its
outermost limit.”
This book is a presentation of Universeum together with the other
nine nominees of the year, chosen from a total of 151 entries. The
selection shows the foremost achievements of Swedish wooden architecture
in the past four years, ranging from big structures like Wingårdh
Arkitekt-kontor’s Universeum to the same practice’s
little Kvarnhuset in Västra Karup, from White Arkitekter’s
Naturum, the en-trance of the Fulufjället National Park, to
Tham Videgård Hansson’s Villa Karlsson on the island
of Tidö-Lindö. Or from Kjellander & Sjöberg’s
student housing in Kista to Danish Bruun & Corfitsen’s
studio houses at the Water-colour Museum in Skärhamn. Architecture
in Wood is profusely illustrated by photographer Åke E:son
Lindman and with descriptions and draw-ings from the architects
themselves. A beautiful and finely crafted work of documentation,
in equal measure informative and inspiring.
