New Release: Rosenbergs Arkitekter

In 2014, seminal Swedish architecture office Rosenbergs Arkitekter ended their practice after 20 years together. They continue separately as Alessandro Ripellino Arkitekt and Varg Arkitekter. A+O celebrates the occasion with a monograph of their productive output to date.

Architects Alessandro Ripellino and Inga Varg took charge of Rosenbergs Arkitekter in 1993. Together, they transformed the practice into one of the leading representatives and renewers of Swedish human modernism. In their work, they give equal consideration to beauty and functionality; each project is infused with poetic simplicity and lends elegance to daily life. Today, their separate practices continue to build upon the legacy established in their two decades together as Rosenbergs Arkitekter. The rich history of Rosenbergs has given way to each architect’s own, distinctive method of handling projects of all sizes, from small building details to large master plans. This book documents their shared legacy, providing an in-depth look at Alessandro Ripellino and Inga Varg’s formative years at the helm of Rosenbergs Arkitekter.

New Release – Museum in the Dock, BIG Architects

How does one breathe new life into an abandoned dry dock? BIG architects have designed an extraordinary museum to revive Denmark’s proud maritime history. The Danish Maritime Museum fits into a unique historical and spatial context between one of Denmark’s most important buildings – the world-famous Kronborg Castle – and a new, ambitious cultural centre. In order to preserve the dock as an open, outdoor space, BIG has placed the museum underground, just outside the wall of a dry dock in a formerly abandoned shipyard.

Author Bruce Peter takes us on a tour of the new Museet for Søfart in Helsingør, Denmark. In text, photographs and architectural drawings, Peter documents this remarkable adventure in architecture, civil and structural engineering.

New Release – SUPERKILEN

Created by BIG, landscape firm Topotek1 and artists Superflex, Superkilen is a kilometre-long urban park wedged within one of the most ethnically diverse and socially challenging neighbourhoods in Denmark. This book celebrates the dawn of a new type of urban public space.

The project triggers the imagination, exploring the idea of a plural “we” and advocating for community as a collective experience of otherness. Superkilen is composed of globally-sourced objects from 60 different countries – the 60 nationalities of the people inhabiting the area surrounding it – ranging from exercise gear from muscle beach Los Angeles to sewage drains from Israel, palm trees from China and neon signs from Qatar and Russia. This book invites readers behind the scenes of the making of Superkilen, through the reflections of its creators, and discusses the project's relationship with changes in the conception of public space and to the increasing expectations of public investments.

New Release: K2S – Beyond the Wall of Sound

In K2S – Beyond the Wall of Sound, the architecture oeuvre of renowned young Finnish architects K2S is at last published in its entirety – from the ovoid, remarkable Kamppi Chapel to the large-scale, complex development of the now iconic Olympic Stadium canopy.

The work of K2S is based on the conviction that good architecture touches the human soul, and does not submit to dogmas or a signature style. To Mikko Summanen, Kimmo Lintula and Niko Sirola, the Finnish word for roots – “juuret” – is essential. Their design philosophy is guided by principles of materiality and its sensory aspects, the notion of context, Finnish building traditions and a fourth, innovative dimension. Edited by Salka Hallström Bornold and designed by Dalston Creative, the volume also includes texts by the group's mentors, Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito and esteemed architecture thinkers Juhani Pallasmaa and Hans Ibelings. The book arrives on September 18 and can be ordered here.

New Release: Palmar Kristmundsson Arkitekt, PK Arkitektar

For our lovers of Icelandic architecture, a little sneak peak inside our new monograph, Palmar Kristmundsson Arkitekt, which launches next month at Design March in Reykjavík. The book follows Kristmundsson’s journey from his first encounters with vernacular Japanese architecture in the small fishing village of Þingeyri, to his rise to one of the most prominent figures in Icelandic architecture today. He is an architect whose eye is as observant to the contour of the landscape as to the details of a door handle – or, as Gert Wingårdh describes him in the book's introduction, a "master of extremes".

PK Arkitektar is an Iceland-based architecture and design studio established in 1986 by the architect Pálmar Kristmundsson. The practice has enjoyed significant success in competitions, and its work has been widely published and exhibited. Born and raised in the Westfjords – a harsh yet stunning part of northwestern Iceland – Pálmar Kristmundsson received his architectural education in Aarhus, Denmark, and was granted a long scholarship in Japan. Through the many ravishing pictures featured in this book, one can trace this cultural and geographical heritage in the graphic volumes signifying PK’s architecture in Iceland and elsewhere.

Release of Contemporary Swedish Art Jewellery tonight at Liljevalchs in Stockholm

Please join us for the release of Contemporary Swedish Art Jewellery, written by Inger Wästberg and featuring the work of Sweden's most innovative jewellery makers. Wednesday, 16 October from 18:00-20:00.

The latest title from Arvinius + Orfeus explores the riveting world of jewellery artists, written by jewellery expert Inger Wästberg and designed by Studio Parasto Backman.

Contemporary Swedish art jewellery is a far cry from what is perceived as typically Swedish. Today’s jewellery artists engage with and reflect on problems in society using a material vocabulary that goes far beyond precious metals and gemstones. This book explores how art jewellery has at last taken its rightful place in the world of contemporary art. Jewellery historian Inger Wästberg has produced a volume that serves as a reference source for curators, collectors and other artists. Thirty-one Swedish jewellery artists are represented from the 1990s to today, with an introduction by Inger Wästberg and a foreword by David Revere McFadden, chief curator at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.

Many of Edvard Munch's iconic images have become universally understood cultural metaphors. The Scream is one of the most widely known art works in the world, but is reproduced as much in adapted and interpreted versions as Munch's original version.

This book presents a large number of artists from our time who have been influenced by Munch, and all carry forward a heritage from the Norwegian master in their own interpretations and adaptions.

The many ways Munch is seen by others are unexpected and reveal both his constant relevance and deep impact on modern art.
